Beginner-Friendly Yoga Classes

At our studio in Port Moody, we offer a range of beginner-friendly yoga classes. You do not need to be flexible, fit or familiar with yoga to begin. Our instructors are knowledgeable, welcoming, and will guide you step by step. In most of our classes, there is a mix of people with different levels of experience, so you will not be the only one finding your way.

Below are some of the yoga classes for beginners we most often recommend for people who are new to yoga, returning after a break, or looking for beginner-friendly guidance.

Beginner-Friendly Drop-in Classes

All Levels Yoga

This is a good starting point if you are generally active and do not have significant limitations (if you do, read on for other class styles). All Levels Yoga offers a balanced practice with step-by-step instruction, options to suit your needs, and enough variety to help you become familiar with common yoga postures and movement patterns.

Yoga for Healthy Hips and Back

This class is a good fit if you are especially interested in caring for your hips, lower back, or overall mobility. It includes accessible movement, stretching, strengthening, and practical awareness for areas of the body that often carry tension, compression, and discomfort.

Yoga for Hips, Back and Balance

This class offers a similar focus on hips and back, with a more attention to balance, postural control and core strength. It can be a helpful choice if you want a steady, functional practice that supports stability, coordination, and confidence in movement.

Yoga for Active Aging

Although this class is called Yoga for Active Aging, it is suitable for all ages. It combines yoga with moderate resistance work using props such as weights and bands. It is a good choice if you are looking for a class that supports mobility, strength, balance, and healthy movement in daily life.

Therapeutic Yoga

Therapeutic Yoga runs once per week and is one of our most popular classes. It offers a full-body therapeutic approach using gentle dynamic movement, stretching, mobilization, and gentle activation. The class draws from functional movement, yoga postures, and prehabilitative exercises to support comfort, mobility, and ease.

Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates is taught methodically, making it approachable for beginners. It focuses on core integrity, strength, mobility, and body awareness. This can be a good option if you want a clear, structured class that builds strength and control over time.

Yoga for Beginners Course

If you would like a more structured introduction to yoga in a 4-5 week progressive course, you can also look for upcoming Yoga for Beginners which run several times through the year.

Not sure where to begin?

There is no single “right” first class. Different people begin for different reasons. Some people want to build strength or balance. Some are working with stiffness, discomfort, or injury history. Others simply want to feel better in their body and find a regular practice. Feel free to contact us to discuss your unique needs.

If you are new to Kushala, our 2-Week Introductory Pass is a great way to explore a few different classes and see what feels like the best fit. You are also welcome to start with a single drop-in class and take it one step at a time.

We know that coming to a new space can feel intimidating. You might wonder what to wear, where to put your mat, whether you will understand the instructions, or whether everyone else will know what they are doing.

You will be guided thoughtfully, and you can take breaks. You can choose options that work for your body, and you will be in good company with others who are also learning and adapting in their own way.
