Our Story
Kushala Yoga opened in 2006 as Newport Yoga in Newport Village, Port Moody. The studio was founded by Chris Dunphy, a former financial advisor who turned to yoga as a way to meet the pressures of modern life with greater steadiness and a healthier way of living.
In 2009, Karen Andersen joined as co-owner, stepping away from a career in software development to help build the studio into what it is today. Kushala Yoga remains independently owned and continues to evolve, inspired by the people who teach and practice here.
A Studio Formed by Its Community
Kushala has grown through the people who practice and teach here. We value yoga as a transformative practice, while making space for lightness, humour and the ordinary realities of being human. It is a place to reconnect with your body, meet what is challenging and recognize the strength and capacity already within you. Sometimes that means a quiet hour to yourself; sometimes it means sharing a little with the people around you. Whether you have been coming for years or are joining us for the first time, you are welcome here.
